Trump Urges Putin to “STOP!” After Russia Launches Deadliest Strike on Kyiv in Months

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed sharp disapproval after Russia unleashed its most lethal attack on Kyiv in nine months, launching a barrage of missiles and drones that left at least 12 dead and over 90 injured.

“I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!” Trump posted on Truth Social Wednesday, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the escalation as he pushes for a contentious ceasefire agreement in the region.

Ukrainian officials reported that Moscow launched 70 missiles and 145 drones in a massive assault focused mainly on Kyiv. Emergency services confirmed strikes hit 13 locations across the capital, including civilian infrastructure and residential areas, with ongoing efforts to rescue those trapped under rubble.

The attack marks the deadliest strike on the city since July 2024, when 33 people were killed in a similar air assault.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from South Africa shortly before Trump’s statement, said the timing of the attack appeared to be aimed at pressuring the U.S. “This is an issue of our survival,” Zelensky told reporters. “We are very direct and transparent in this matter. I don’t see strong pressure against Russia or new sanctions packages for their aggression.”

Zelensky also pushed back against Trump’s push for negotiations, stating Ukraine is only willing to consider talks after a complete ceasefire, emphasizing the imbalance in how the U.S. appears to be treating Kyiv and Moscow.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed responsibility for the attack, calling it a “massive strike” using long-range precision weapons against Ukraine’s defense and industrial infrastructure. “All targets were hit,” the ministry said in a statement.

Following the attack, Zelensky announced he would cut short his South African visit and return to Ukraine, calling on international partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses. “It is extremely important that everyone around the world sees and understands what is really happening,” he said.
